## FAQ

### Why does a copied emoji show up as a box somewhere else?

Emoji are drawn by the emoji font of the operating system or app. Newer emoji such as 🫠, 🩷 or 🫨 need a recent system version; older Windows, Android versions or some apps show a box or two separate symbols instead. The copy is fine — it will display correctly on an up-to-date device or app.

### How do skin tones work?

Unicode defines five skin tone modifiers (U+1F3FB to U+1F3FF). Placed right after an emoji that supports them, they change its skin tone: 👍 + 🏽 = 👍🏽. When you choose a tone, supported emoji get the modifier automatically and that is what gets copied; other emoji stay unchanged.

### What are code points, HTML entities and shortcodes for?

The code point (e.g. U+1F600) is the emoji’s number in Unicode. The HTML entity (😀) can go straight into web page source, while \u{1F600} is the JavaScript escape and \1F600 the CSS content value. Shortcodes are generated from the CLDR English name (e.g. :grinning_face:) and may differ from the shortcodes Slack or GitHub use.

### Why does deleting one emoji sometimes remove several characters?

Many emoji are made of several code points: 🧑‍💻 is person + zero-width joiner + laptop, and flags are two regional letters. The composer’s “Remove last” deletes a whole emoji (grapheme cluster) so it never leaves broken pieces behind, whereas Backspace in some editors removes only part of it.
