The grid method is one of the oldest ways to transfer a reference to paper or canvas accurately: draw the same number of squares on the photo and on your surface, then copy one square at a time so proportions and placement stay correct. This tool prepares the reference for you. Pick a canvas or paper size — A5 to A2, Letter, 8×10, 11×14, 16×20 or 18×24 inches, 30×40 cm and more, or a custom size — and the photo is cropped to that aspect ratio, with sliders to move the crop; or keep the photo’s own proportions and enter its real width. Set the grid by count (say 6 columns, with rows filled automatically for square cells) or by cell size (2 inches, 3 cm or 200 px per square); the tool shows each cell’s real size on the canvas so you can rule the same grid on your surface. Add diagonals per cell or across the whole image, rule-of-thirds, golden-ratio and centre lines, and row/column labels (A, B, C… and 1, 2, 3…) outside the image or in each cell’s corner, with adjustable colours, line width and opacity. To make the reference easier to read, switch it to greyscale, a 3–9 level value study, posterized colours, an edge sketch, or a blank grid on white. Export the gridded image, or print it to scale across several pages: choose the paper, margin and overlap and each page gets crop marks, dashed overlap lines, a page label and a scale bar — print directly or download a PDF. Everything happens in your browser.

## How to use

1. Drop a reference photo, choose the canvas or paper size and orientation, and adjust the crop if needed
2. Set the grid (by count or by cell size in cm / in / px), guides, labels, colours and width, plus greyscale, value study or sketch helpers
3. Export the gridded image, or choose the printer paper, margin and overlap to print to scale or download a PDF

## FAQ

### How many squares should my grid have?

Beginners and detailed subjects benefit from small squares — for example 2-inch squares on a 16×20 in canvas, which gives 8 × 10 cells. With practice you can use fewer squares just to place the big shapes. Cell-size mode with whole centimetres or inches is easiest to measure out on your paper, and square cells are on by default because they keep proportions undistorted.

### Why choose a canvas size and crop first?

If the photo and canvas have different aspect ratios, the same number of squares will have different shapes on each, and your drawing comes out stretched. Cropping the photo to the canvas ratio first makes every square on the reference exactly proportional to the matching square on your surface, and lets the tool tell you each square’s real size.

### What is a value study for?

It reduces the photo to 3–9 grey levels by brightness, removing colour and fussy detail so you can see the big light-and-dark pattern at a glance — the foundation of realistic drawing and painting. Three values suit quick thumbnails, five is the classic exercise, and seven to nine help with careful rendering.

### Will the printed size be accurate?

Each page is laid out in exact millimetres and carries a 5 cm (or 2 in) scale bar in the footer. Print at “Actual size / 100%”, not “Fit to page”, then measure the scale bar to confirm. Neighbouring pages overlap, marked with dashed lines — trim the margins, line up the dashes and tape them together.
