Need to check homework or see exactly how a problem is worked out? Enter two numbers and get the vertical layout taught in school. Long division uses the familiar bracket: the divisor sits outside, the quotient goes above, and each step shows the multiply and subtract lines with the next digit brought down. Choose a whole-number answer with a remainder, or keep dividing to a set number of decimal places — when the remainders start to repeat, the repeating block is marked with a bar. Decimal divisors are converted first by moving both decimal points. The same page does column addition with carried digits, subtraction with regrouping (crossed-out digits and new values above) and long multiplication with partial products, including decimals. Every step is also listed in words, followed by a check such as quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.

## How to use

1. Choose addition, subtraction, multiplication or long division
2. Enter two non-negative whole numbers or decimals; for division pick a remainder or a decimal answer and the number of places
3. Read the vertical layout, the answer and the step-by-step explanation

## FAQ

### How does long division work, step by step?

Repeat four steps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Divide the first part of the dividend that is at least as large as the divisor, write that digit of the quotient above its last digit, multiply it by the divisor, subtract, then bring down the next digit and repeat. When no digits are left, what remains is the remainder — or, for a decimal answer, add a decimal point and keep bringing down zeros.

### How do I know when a decimal repeats?

Once you are bringing down zeros, each step depends only on the remainder. As soon as a remainder appears that you have seen before, the digits from that point on repeat forever. The calculator stops there and draws a bar over the repeating block, for example 1 ÷ 7 = 0.142857 with the bar over 142857.

### How do I divide by a decimal?

Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right until it is a whole number, and move the point in the dividend the same number of places (adding zeros if needed). For 1.5 ÷ 0.25 that gives 150 ÷ 25 = 6. The first step in the explanation shows this conversion.

### Where does the decimal point go in long multiplication?

Multiply as if both numbers were whole numbers, lining them up on the right. Then count the total number of decimal places in both factors and place the point that many digits from the right of the product — for 0.25 × 1.6 there are three, so 400 becomes 0.400 = 0.4.
