A book PDF usually opens with a cover, copyright page, contents and preface, so printed page 1 is really page 12 of the file. Typing 45 into the viewer takes you to the wrong page, which makes navigation, citations and discussion painful. PDF page labels (/PageLabels) exist to fix exactly that: they change the page numbers shown in the viewer’s page box and thumbnails without touching the page content. This tool reads any labels the file already has and lets you define ranges — start page, numbering style (1, 2, 3 / i, ii, iii / I, II, III / a, b, c / A, B, C / none), prefix (such as “A-” or “Appendix ”) and start number. A preview lists the label every page will get before you write the file. Presets cover the common cases — all decimal, front matter i–x then 1…, cover plus front matter plus body — and one click removes all labels. Non-ASCII prefixes are stored as Unicode, so Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Foxit, macOS Preview and others display them correctly. Everything runs in your browser; your file is never uploaded.

## FAQ

### How are page labels different from adding page numbers?

Page labels only tell the viewer what each page is called — they appear in the page number box, thumbnails and print dialog, and nothing is drawn on the page. Add Page Numbers actually prints numbers on the pages. Professionally produced e-books often have both: numbers printed on the page and matching labels so the viewer’s navigation agrees.

### Why must page 1 belong to a range?

The PDF specification requires the page label number tree to start at the first page (index 0); otherwise some viewers ignore the labels or display them incorrectly. So the first range must start at page 1. If you don’t want the cover numbered, give the first range the style None (prefix only) and the prefix “Cover”.

### How do letters continue after Z?

Following the PDF specification, letters go A…Z, then AA, BB, CC…, then AAA, BBB — not AA, AB, AC as in spreadsheet columns. The preview matches what viewers actually show. Roman numerals have no upper limit; 1994 appears as mcmxciv, for example.

### Which viewers support page labels? Is my file uploaded?

Adobe Acrobat and Reader, the built-in PDF viewers in Chrome and Edge, Foxit, PDF-XChange, macOS Preview, SumatraPDF and others all support them — you can type “iv” or “45” into the page box to jump there. Viewers without support simply ignore the labels and show physical page numbers. All processing happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
