A PDF has a fixed page layout, so on a phone or e-reader you keep zooming and panning to read tiny text. EPUB is a reflowable e-book format whose text rewraps to fit the screen and your chosen font size. This tool reads the position, size and font of every line in the PDF, joins broken lines back into paragraphs — including sentences that run across a page break — detects headings from font sizes, keeps bold, italic and bullet lists, and drops headers, footers and page numbers that repeat at the top or bottom of most pages. Chapters can follow the PDF’s own bookmarks (the most accurate), the detected headings, or a fixed number of pages, and the table of contents is written both as an EPUB 3 nav document and an EPUB 2 toc.ncx so old and new readers alike can use it. Optionally keep the illustrations in place, render page 1 as the cover, and set the title, author and language (which affects line breaking and fonts in the reader). The package follows the EPUB spec — mimetype first and uncompressed, every XHTML file well-formed XML — and a structure check runs after conversion. Everything happens in your browser; the file is never uploaded.

### Which e-readers can open the EPUB?

The output is standard EPUB 3 with an EPUB 2 toc.ncx as well, so Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Calibre, Thorium and most reading apps open it directly. For Kindle, upload the EPUB with Send to Kindle (web or email) and Amazon converts it for you.

### Which PDFs convert well?

Text-heavy books, novels, reports and papers work best, especially PDFs with bookmarks, which give precise chapters. Tables, formulas, multi-column pages and magazine-style layouts become plain paragraphs, so their layout is lost. Scans have no extractable text; add a text layer with our Scanned PDF OCR tool first.

### Why are some headers or page numbers still there, or some text missing?

Lines that repeat at the top or bottom of most pages (with digits treated as wildcards) and page labels such as “Page 3” are treated as headers and footers. Headers that change on every page, such as running chapter titles, can slip through, and in rare cases body text that repeats at the top of pages may be removed — untick Remove headers, footers and page numbers and convert again.

### Was it checked with epubcheck? Is my file uploaded?

The built-in check confirms the mimetype entry’s position and compression, that every XHTML, OPF and NCX file is well-formed XML, that the manifest matches the package contents and that both tables of contents exist — the most common reasons a reader refuses a file. For full spec validation you can also run epubcheck. The whole conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
