A realistic vernier caliper (10, 20 and 50 divisions, plus a 39 mm long 20-division vernier) and a micrometer screw gauge. Drag the slider or turn the thimble and use the magnifier to see which lines coincide. Every reading is explained step by step: where the least count comes from, the main-scale reading, the coinciding line, whether the half-millimetre line is showing, the estimated digit and the zero-error correction. Practice mode generates random readings and marks your answer instantly, including the number of decimals.

## How to use

1. Choose a vernier type or switch to the micrometer
2. Drag the vernier slider or the thimble (or type a position) and use the magnifier on the close-up
3. Read the step-by-step explanation; tick Zero error to see the correction
4. Open Reading practice, pick an instrument and unit, type your reading and check it

## Features

- 10-, 20- and 50-division verniers and a micrometer, drawn to scale
- Overview, scale close-up and a magnifier that follows your pointer, touch friendly
- Coinciding lines, half-mm line and thimble line highlighted in red
- Step-by-step reading with positive and negative zero errors
- Random practice in mm or cm, optionally with zero error, checking decimals too
- Score and streak counter plus a list of typical misreadings

## FAQ

### Do you estimate an extra digit on a vernier caliper?

No. The last digit comes from the line that coincides, so the reading stops at the least count: 0.1 mm for a 10-division vernier and 0.01 mm for 20 and 50 divisions (a 20-division reading ends in 0 or 5, a 50-division reading in an even digit). Writing 23.450 mm adds a digit you did not measure.

### Why do you estimate on a micrometer, and to which digit?

The spindle pitch is 0.5 mm and the thimble has 50 divisions, so one division is 0.01 mm. The datum line usually falls between two thimble lines, so you estimate one more digit: readings in millimetres have three decimals, for example 5.623 mm. Keep a trailing zero: 2.500 mm, not 2.5 mm.

### How do I know whether the half-millimetre line counts?

Whole millimetres are marked above the datum line and half millimetres below it. If a lower half-mm line is visible just left of the thimble edge, add 0.5 mm. It is easy to get wrong when the thimble reads close to 0 or 50, so check both together. The tool marks a visible half-mm line in red.

### How is zero error corrected?

Close the jaws (or anvil and spindle) and read the instrument: that reading is the zero error, positive if the vernier zero is right of the main zero and negative if left. Then true value = reading − zero error. With a zero error of −0.10 mm and a reading of 23.40 mm, the true length is 23.50 mm.

### How many decimals when I convert to centimetres?

Converting units does not change the number of significant figures; only the decimal point moves. 23.45 mm becomes 2.345 cm and 5.623 mm becomes 0.5623 cm. In practice mode with cm selected, the marking expects one more decimal than in mm.
