FAQ
- Can it open encrypted RAR / 7Z files?
- No. The libarchive build used in the browser ships without a crypto module, so password-protected RAR and 7Z cannot be opened. Encrypted ZIP is unaffected — use the zip extractor, which handles both ZipCrypto and AES.
- Are multi-volume archives (.part1.rar, .z01) supported?
- Not yet. Split archives have to be read as one continuous stream across all volumes, and this tool takes a single file at a time. Join them with a desktop tool first.
- Can it create rar or 7z files?
- No. RAR compression is patented and proprietary with no browser implementation available, and only extraction is wired up for 7z. Use the ZIP compressor when you need to pack something — zip opens everywhere.
- How large an archive can it handle?
- RAR and 7Z are read into memory in full, so keep those to a few hundred MB; larger ones get slow or fail. ZIP is read on demand and has no such limit — the zip extractor is the better choice there.
