💸Split Bill Calculator - Split Group Expenses & Settle Up with Fewest Payments

On trips, group dinners and in shared flats, different people keep paying for different things, and working out who owes whom is a chore. Enter the people and every expense — amount, who paid and who took part — and choose how to split it: equally, by shares (say 2 for adults and 1 for kids) or by exact amounts when everyone ordered their own. You can also add a tip or service charge percentage. The panel on the right shows what each person paid, their share and their balance, and plans the fewest transfers to settle up — n people never need more than n−1 payments. Copy the summary text straight into your group chat, or copy a share link that opens the same bill for everyone. Amounts are calculated in whole cents with largest-remainder rounding, so shares always add up exactly.

FAQ

How are the fewest transfers worked out?
First each person’s balance is computed (paid minus share): positive means they should get money back, negative means they owe. Exact matches are paired first, then the person who owes the most repeatedly pays the person who is owed the most until everyone is square. That needs at most n−1 transfers for n people — usually far fewer than paying back each expense separately.
What happens to leftover cents?
Everything is calculated in whole cents. Splitting 100.00 three ways gives 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33 — the extra cent goes to one person using the largest-remainder method, so the shares always add up exactly to the total and no cents appear or vanish.
What if someone skipped part of it or kids pay less?
Every expense has its own list of participants, so people who weren’t involved don’t pay. Use “By shares” for proportional splits (adult 2, child 1), or “Exact amounts” when everyone ordered separately — the tool tells you how much is still unassigned or over the total until it matches.
Is my data uploaded? How do I share the bill?
Nothing is uploaded. The bill is saved automatically in your browser’s local storage. “Copy share link” encodes the whole bill into the part of the URL after the #, so anyone opening the link sees the same expenses and settlement without the data ever touching a server. You can also just paste the summary text into your chat.
